Chen Ping’s Fifth Strategy

Advising Liu Bang to Lure the Disobedient Han Xin into a Trap

After Xiang Yu's death in 202 B.C., Zhongli Mo (钟离昩, d. 201 B.C.), one of Xiang Yu's generals, came to Han Xin seeking refuge, which Han Xin granted him on account of their past friendship. When Liu Bang heard of this, he ordered Han Xin to arrest him, but Han refused [18].

When a year had passed, and Liu Bang heard further that Han Xin was plotting against him, and still harboring the fugitive Zhongli Mo, Chen Ping suggested to him to lure Han into a trap. Han fell for the ruse and was taken captive when he came to meet Liu Bang to discuss the Emperor’s upcoming tour of the Marshes of Yunmeng -- a fiction fabricated for Han Xin’s benefit. Although Liu Bang later pardoned Han Xin, he still demoted him from vassal king to marquis.

Advising Liu Bang to Lure the Disobedient Han Xin into a Trap is an application of the fifteenth stratagem, Lure the Tiger Out of the Mountains, which is associated both with the 39th and 40th hexagrams, Water over Mountain, and Thunder over Water, respectively [1], [28].
