上屋抽梯

(shàng wū chōu tī)

Remove the Ladder Once the Enemy Has Ascended to the Roof

Liu Qi (刘琦, died 209 A.D.) of Eastern Han once turned to Zhuge Liang for advice concerning self-preservation, but Zhuge Liang refused to help him. On a later occasion, while visiting a garden, Liu Qi persuaded Zhuge to join him in climbing a nearby tower. In the tower, while visiting and feasting, Liu Qi secretly instructed his servants to remove the very ladder by which they ascended. He then told Zhuge Liang, "Now, nothing goes up to Heaven and nothing goes down to Earth. Whatever you say will be heard by me only. Can't you say something now?" Zhuge Liang replied, "Sir, haven't you read that Shensheng was in danger because he remained in Jin while Chong'er was safe because he was outside Jin?" Liu Qi understood what Zhuge Liang was alluding to, and secretly came up with an idea [7].

Remove the Ladder Once the Enemy Has Ascended to the Roof is associated with the 21st hexagram, Fire over Thunder. The yang line in the fourth position (from the bottom) is viewed as having moved there from below, now isolated with no line of retreat [1], [28].
