关门捉贼

(guān mén zhuō zéi)

Shut the Door to Catch the Thief

An opportunity to completely capture the enemy, when presented, should be seized; allowing the enemy to escape sows the seeds for future conflict.

During the Battle of Changping in 260 B.C., Bai Qi (白起, 332-257 B.C.) succeeded Wang He (王龁) as the commanding general of the Qin army, and soon fought against the Zhao army commanded by the inexperienced Zhao Kuo (赵括, died 260 B.C.). When Bai Qi was fighting Zhao Kuo, he allowed for Zhao to win a battle, and then challenged him to a 'decisive' match at a strategic position closer to the State of Qi. Bai Qi again let the Zhao army win while quietly cutting off their supply lines. Starving, Zhao's forces began killing one another for food, and in a desperate attempt to break the blockage, Zhao Kuo was killed and his army surrendered. Bai Qi had them buried alive [18].

Shut the Door to Catch the Thief is associated with the 23rd hexagram, Mountain over Earth. A Mountain resting over a weak foundation is vulnerable to collapse. Here it is suggested to wait rather than to take direct action, and let the opponent collapse onto itself [1], [28].
