30th Stratagem

反客为主

(fǎn kè wéi zhǔ)

Make the Host and the Guest Exchange Roles

Initially, pretend to be a guest, but develop from inside to later become the owner.

After conquering the State of Qin for the first time in 206 B.C., Liu Bang (cf. stratagem 5) allowed his stronger ally Xiang Yu to take over as its ruler. But while Xiang Yu relaxed, Liu Bang was building up his forces, and in 202 B.C., he attacked and usurped Qin (in the Battle of Gaixia). Xiang Yu, in shame, took his own life [18], [29].

Make the Host and the Guest Exchange Roles is associated with the 53rd hexagram, Wind over Mountain. The effect of Wind's pliability over the firmness of the Mountain is likened to a slow and gradual development toward cooperation and adaptability [1], [28].
