If All Else Fails, Retreat
Attempting to unify China, Zhuge Liang of Shu made six forays against the more powerful State of Wei. Although none were successful, he managed each time to bring his 100,000 (or so) troops out via the steep Qinling Mountains without sustaining significant losses. One of the methods he used to secure space for himself was to 'thrust a spear from the rear of the horse', which involved a rapid attack followed by an equally rapid retreat. This would leaving the enemy forces uncertain of what was happening thereby giving Liang time enough to get away [7], [15], [18].
If All Else Fails, Retreat is associated with the 33rd hexagram, Heaven over Mountain. The yin lines represent an opponent rising up, and the yang lines represent the sustained contact necessary for making a successful retreat, which often still involves making some anticipatory counterattacks [1], [28].
