远交近攻

(yuǎn jiāo jìn gōng)

Befriend a Distant State While Attacking a Neighbor

In 266 B.C., the Wei national Fan Ju (范雎, died 255 B.C.) fled to the State of Qin after enduring persecution and torture by the Wei chancellor, Wei Qi (魏齐), and vowed revenge upon his home state. King Zhaoxiang (秦昭襄王, 325–251 B.C.) of Qin was considering attacking the distant State of Qi. Fan Ju advised the king that, as he would have to pass through the nearer states of Han and Wei, it would be better to ally himself with Qi, and also Chu, in defeating Han and Wei. This strategy proved successful, and King Zhaoxiang was impressed, and appointed Fan Ju as chancellor of Qin [8], [18].

Befriend a Distant State While Attacking a Neighbor is associated with the 38th hexagram, Fire over Lake. There is a polarity depicted here as the Lake move downward and fire moves moves upward. The hexagram's strong yang line in the second position (from the bottom) aids the distant weak yin line in the fifth position in defeating the yang line in the fourth position This can also be understood to mean that two opposing approaches can be made to serve each other [1], [28].
