无中生有

(wú zhōng shēng yǒu)

Create Something out of Nothing

i.e. Make an opponent believe there is something when in fact there is nothing.

In 383 A.D., during the Battle of Fei River, the Former Qin had an overwhelming advantage, in numbers, over Jin. Instead of contracting into a defensive, Jin attacked the Qin forces early on, making wide formations, and giving the illusion that they indeed had the manpower to match the Qin forces. Emperor Fu Jian (苻坚, 337-385 A.D.) of Former Qin was forced to begin his planning under pressure, and eventually ordered almost all of his forces to retreat from the river banks. Low morale caused the Former Qin to go into chaos, and Jin came out victorious [20].

Create Something out of Nothing is associated both with the second hexagram, Earth over Earth, and the 24th hexagram, Earth over Thunder. Earth over Earth represents the tenth lunar month, when Yin is at its fullest, expressing itself in snow and frost. After the winter solstice, Yang begins to rise again, this being represented by Earth over Thunder. i.e. We move from the still and silent winter into the teeming and stirring. Similarly, from the seemingly empty can be drawn a hidden power [1], [28].
