抛砖引玉
(pāo zhuān yǐn yù)
Cast Out a Brick to Secure Jade
This proverb refers back to Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), when the poet Chang Jian (常建, 708-765 A.D.) devised a ploy for achieving collaboration with the much more renowned Zhao Gu (赵嘏, 806-853 A.D.). After learning of a tentative visit by Zhao Gu to the Divine Rock Temple in Suzhou, it is said that Chang Jian scratched half of his poem onto the wall of the temple. While passing by, Zhao Gu was unable to resist the urge to finished Chang Jian’s poem.
Cast Out a Brick to Secure Jade is associated with the fourth hexagram, Thunder over Water. The yang line in the fifth position from the top is inexperienced, but is mistaken as valuable by the arrogant and overreaching, and subsequently hurled into to the topmost position [1], [28].
