(fǔ dǐ chōu xīn)
Remove the Firewood from Under the Pot
I.e. Take out the opponent's salient argument. Steal their thunder.
In 200 A.D., when Cao Cao was besieged by Yuan Shao (袁绍, died 202 A.D.), he used a detachment of men dressed in the enemy's clothing to infiltrate the enemy camp at Wuchao and set fire to their grain stores. This not only caused them supply problems, but created immediate fear, which was further deepened by Cao Cao sending mutilated enemy soldiers back to their comrades. Yuan Shao's forces scattered in disarray [13].
Remove the Firewood from Under the Pot is associated with the 41st hexagram, Mountain over Lake. The yang line which previously held the third position from the top, has moved upward, now depicting an unstable structure with a weakened foundation [1], [28].
