Wait at Leisure While the Enemy Labors
Choosing when and where a battle takes place can be a great advantage. When circumstances can be so arranged, the opportunity to cause one's opponent to needlessly expend energy will often arise.
In 342 B.C., during the Battle of Maling, the Wei forces had the advantage over those of Qi in both numbers and morale. Sun Bin (serving Qi) ordered his men to retreat. Being well positioned and well-prepared while the Wei pursued them with tiresome haste, Sun Bin was able to ambush and defeat them [18], [29].
Wait at Leisure While the Enemy Labors is also associated with the 41st hexagram, Mountain over Thunder. What was below has moved upward, weakening what was below. One interpretation is that a benefit may be got from a loss suffered by the opponent [1], [28].
