Hide a Knife Behind a Smile
Few had such a way with people as did Li Yifu (李义府, 614-666 A.D.), the scheming chancellor of Tang in 655 A.D. Kind and charming though he seemed, woe to anyone who crossed him. He was able to cultivate such good terms with Emperor Gaozong (唐高宗, 628-683 A.D.) that any complaints about him were for a long time ignored. The emperor eventually banished him to a frontier post [21]. Many years later, a poet wrote of Li Yufu that 'a dagger hides behind his smiles'.
Hide a Knife Behind a Smile is associated with the 57th hexagram, Wind over Wind. Enticing an opponent into letting their guard down in order to get past their defenses requires the soft pliability of Wind, unseen, yet pushing ever so gently to make its entrance [1], [28].
